Determining volume status and state

Volume states  Top

A volume can be in one of the following three states, sometimes called mount states:

Volume status  Top

A volume can have one or more of the following statuses:

Note
Although FlexVol volumes do not directly involve RAID, the state of a FlexVol volume includes the state of its containing aggregate. Thus, the states pertaining to RAID apply to FlexVol volumes as well as traditional volumes.

Determining the state and status of volumes  Top

To determine what state a volume is in, and what status currently applies to it, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol status

Result

Data ONTAP displays a concise summary of all the volumes in the storage system. The State column displays whether the volume is online, offline, or restricted. The Status column displays the volume's RAID level, whether the volume is a FlexVol or traditional volume, and any status other than normal (such as partial or degraded).

Example

> vol status
Volume State Status          Options
  vol0 online raid4, flex     root,guarantee=volume
  volA online raid_dp, trad
                  mirrored

Note
To see a complete list of all options, including any that are off or not set for this volume, use the -v flag with the vol status command.

When to take a volume offline  Top

You can take a volume offline and make it unavailable to the storage system. You do this for the following reasons:

Taking a volume offline  Top

To take a volume offline, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol offline vol_name

vol_name is the name of the volume to be taken offline.

Note
When you take a FlexVol volume offline, it relinquishes any unused space that has been allocated for it in its containing aggregate. If this space is allocated for another volume and then you bring the volume back online, this can result in an overcommitted aggregate.

For more information, see Bringing a volume online in an overcommitted aggregate.

When to make a volume restricted  Top

When you make a volume restricted, it is available for only a few operations. You do this for the following reasons:

Restricting a volume  Top

To restrict a volume, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol restrict vol_name

Bringing a volume online  Top

You bring a volume back online to make it available to the storage system after you deactivated that volume.

Note
If you bring a FlexVol volume online into an aggregate that does not have sufficient free space in the aggregate to fulfill the space guarantee for that volume, this command fails.

For more information, see Bringing a volume online in an overcommitted aggregate.

To bring a volume back online, complete the following step.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command:

vol online vol_name

vol_name is the name of the volume to reactivate.

Attention
If the volume is inconsistent, the command prompts you for confirmation. If you bring an inconsistent volume online, it might suffer further file system corruption.
