A FlexCache volume can be deployed in a WAN configuration or a LAN configuration.
In a WAN deployment, the FlexCache volume is remote from the data center. As clients request data, the FlexCache volume caches popular data, giving the end user faster access to information.
In a LAN deployment, or accelerator mode, the FlexCache volume is local to the administrative data center, and is used to offload work from busy file servers and free system resources.
In a WAN deployment, the FlexCache volume is placed as close as possible to the remote office. Client requests are then explicitly directed to the storage system. If valid data exists in the cache, that data is served directly to the client. If the data does not exist in the cache, it is retrieved across the WAN from the origin system, cached in the FlexCache volume, and returned to the client.
The following diagram shows a typical FlexCache WAN deployment.
In a LAN deployment, a FlexCache volume is used to offload busy data servers. Frequently accessed data, or "hot objects" are replicated and cached by the FlexCache volume. This saves network bandwidth, reduces latency, and improves storage use, because only the most frequently used data is moved and stored.
The following example illustrates a typical LAN deployment.
