Physically transporting traditional volumes

About physically moving traditional volumes  Top

You can physically move traditional volumes from one storage system to another. You might want to move a traditional volume to a different storage system to perform one of the following tasks:

You can physically move disks, disk shelves, or loops to move a volume from one storage system to another. You need the manual for your disk shelf to move a traditional volume.

The following terms are used:

Moving a traditional volume  Top

To physically move a traditional volume, perform the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Enter the following command at the source system to locate the disks that contain the volume vol_name:

aggr status vol_name -r

Result

The locations of the data and parity disks in the volume are displayed.

2

Enter the following command on the source system to take the volume and its containing aggregate offline:

aggr offline vol_name
3

Follow the instructions in the disk shelf hardware guide to remove the data and parity disks for the specified volume from the source system.

4

Follow the instructions in the disk shelf hardware guide to install the disks in a disk shelf connected to the destination system.

Result

When the destination system sees the disks, it places the foreign volume offline. If the foreign volume has the same name as an existing volume on the system, the system renames it vol_name(d), where vol_name is the original name of the volume and d is a digit that makes the name unique.

5

Enter the following command to make sure that the newly moved volume is complete:

aggr status new_vol_name

new_vol_name is the (possibly new) name of the volume you just moved.

Attention
If the foreign volume is incomplete (it has a status of partial), add all missing disks before proceeding. Do not try to add missing disks after the volume comes online--doing so causes them to become hot spare disks. You can identify the disks currently used by the volume using the aggr status -r command.

6

If the storage system renamed the foreign volume because of a name conflict, enter the following command on the target system to rename the volume:

aggr rename new_vol_name vol_name

new_vol_name is the name of the volume you want to rename.

vol_name is the new name of the volume.

7

Enter the following command on the target system to bring the volume and its containing aggregate online:

aggr online vol_name

vol_name is the name of the newly moved volume.

Result

The volume is brought online on the target system.

8

Enter the following command to confirm that the added volume came online:

aggr status vol_name

vol_name is the name of the newly moved volume.

9

If you access the storage systems using CIFS, update your CIFS shares as necessary.

10

If you access the storage systems using NFS, complete the following steps for both the source and the destination system:

  1. Update the system /etc/exports file.
  2. Run exportfs -a.
  3. Update the appropriate mount point information to the /etc/fstab or /etc/vfstab file on clients that mount volumes from the storage system.
