When Data ONTAP receives a write request, it first determines whether the file to be written is in a qtree. If it is, and the write would exceed any hard quota, the write fails and a message is written to the console describing the type of quota exceeded and the volume. If the write would exceed any soft quota, the write succeeds, but a message is still written to the console.
SNMP traps can be used to arrange e-mail notification when hard or soft quotas are exceeded. You can access and adapt a sample quota notification script on the NOW site at http://now.netapp.com/ under Software Downloads, in the Tools and Utilities section.
