This guide describes how to upgrade NetApp® storage systems to the latest release of Data ONTAP® firmware and software. It covers all storage system models that run Data ONTAP 7.1 and higher; see the Data ONTAP 7.1 Release Notes for more information about supported storage systems.
Note
Upgrade procedures for gateway filer (V-Series, formerly known as gFilerTM) systems are covered in V-Series documentation. The information in this guide does not apply to V-Series systems.
This guide is for system administrators who are familiar with operating systems that run on the storage system's clients, such as UNIX®, Windows NT®, Windows® 2000, and Windows XP. It assumes that you know how to use a Web browser.
Data ONTAP manual (man) pages are available for the following types of information. They are grouped into sections according to standard UNIX naming conventions.
Man pages can be viewed in the following ways:
man command_or_file_name
Note
All Data ONTAP man pages are stored on the storage system in files whose names are prefixed with the string "na_" to distinguish them from client man pages. The prefixed names are used to refer to storage system man pages from other man pages and sometimes appear in the NAME field of the man page, but the prefixes are not part of the command, file, or services.
For more information, see the man(1) man page.
Storage systems that run Data ONTAP are sometimes referred to as filers, storage appliances, appliances, or systems. The name of the graphical user interface for Data ONTAP, FilerView, reflects one of these common usages.
This guide uses the term "type" to mean pressing one or more keys on the keyboard. It uses the term "enter" to mean pressing one or more keys and then pressing the Enter key, or clicking in a field in a graphical interface and typing information into it.
Tasks you perform as a Data ONTAP administrator can be performed by entering commands at the storage system console, in configuration files, or through a Telnet session or a Remote Shell connection.
Another method of performing many common tasks is to use the FilerView® graphical management interface for viewing and managing storage system from a Web browser. FilerView comes with every storage system, is easy to use, and includes Help that explains Data ONTAP features and how to work with them in FilerView.
For more information about accessing a storage system with FilerView, and about FilerView Help, see the System Administration Guide.
In examples that illustrate commands executed on a UNIX workstation, the command syntax and output might differ, depending on your version of UNIX.
When describing key combinations, this guide uses the hyphen
(-) to separate individual keys. For example, "Ctrl-D" means pressing the "Control" and "D" keys simultaneously. Also, this guide uses the term "Enter" to refer to the key that generates a carriage return, although the key is named "Return" on some keyboards.
The following table describes typographic conventions used in this guide.
This guide contains two types of special messages:
Note
A note contains important information that helps you install or operate the system efficiently.
Attention
An Attention notice contains instructions that you must follow to avoid a system crash, loss of data, or damage to the equipment.
