SnapVault is a disk-based storage backup feature of Data ONTAP that enables data stored on multiple filer and Open Systems (non-filer) storage systems to be backed up to a central, secondary storage system quickly and efficiently as read-only snapshots. In event of data loss or corruption on a filer or open storage system, backed up data can be restored from the SnapVault secondary storage system to the primary or open storage system with little of the downtime and uncertainty associated with conventional tape backup and restore operations.
A filer that is the primary storage system requires a software license to enable the SnapVault ONTAP service. The license is installed on the filer at the factory per your order, so the initial setup of your filer does not involve entering license codes.
You need to enter license codes only if any of the following conditions applies:
You purchased a filer with a release earlier than Data ONTAP™ software 4.0 software and you are upgrading it.
You want to enable SnapVault ONTAP primary service, which was not previously licensed for your filer.
You reinstalled the file system on your filer.
You are provided with the appropriate license codes when the software upgrade kit is shipped to you or when you are given instructions for obtaining the software upgrade over the Internet.
Note: SnapVault ONTAP primary and SnapVault ONTAP secondary cannot be licensed on the same filer at the same time.
