Managing Snapshots

In the Manage Snapshots page you can perform the following procedures:

Renaming a snapshot:

To rename an existing snapshot, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Manage Snapshots page, click on the name of the snapshot you want to rename.

    Result:
The Rename Snapshot page is displayed.

  2. In the Snapshot Name field, enter the new name for the snapshot.

  3. Click Rename.

Deleting a snapshot:

Data ONTAP deletes snapshots automatically; however, you might want to delete snapshots before the preset time.

Deleting a snapshot frees up disk space, but you should choose carefully which snapshot to delete that will free up the disk space you need for the file system. Before trying to conserve space by deleting a large snapshot file, examine the cumulative values in the display. If two adjacent snapshot files show little difference in the cumulative values, most of the data referenced by the snapshots is the same. In this case, removing one of the snapshots does not free much disk space.

To delete an existing snapshot, complete the following steps:

  1. Select the check box for the snapshot you want to delete.

  2. Click Delete.

  3. When the confirmation box displays, click OK to delete the snapshot.

Adding a snapshot:

To add a snapshot, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Manage Snapshots page, click Add Snapshots.

    Result:
The Add Snapshot page is displayed.

  2. In the Volume field, use the drop-down list to select the volume to which you want to add a snapshot.

  3. In the Snapshot Name field, enter a name for the new snapshot.

  4. Click Add.

Configuring a snapshot:

To configure snapshots, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Volume column, click on the name of the volume for which you want to configure Snapshots.

    Result:
The Configure Snapshots window is displayed.

  2. In the Snapshot Reserve field, enter the percentage of the reserve to use for snapshots.

  3. In the Snapshot Directory Visible field, select the check box if you want to make the .snapshot directory visible.

  4. In the Scheduled Snapshots field, select the check box if you want to enable scheduled snapshots.

  5. In the Snapshots to Keep fields (Weekly, Nightly, and Hourly), enter how many snapshots you want to keep on this volume for each period of time.

  6. In the Hourly Snapshots Schedule clocks, select the check boxes that correspond to the hours you want to have snapshots taken, both for a.m. and p.m.

  7. Click Apply.

Note FilerView does not support managing snapshots for aggregates. Use the command-line interface to manage aggregate snapshots. For details, see the Data ONTAP Data Protection, Online Backup and Recovery Guide.
