About ContentDirector
Function and key features
ContentDirector automates the distribution of content over a network from a central source to multiple destinations. The network can be a local area network, intranet, or internet. Reusable, user-defined rules govern content distribution tasks, including the location of source files and destinations, scheduling, and how the content is handled over the network.
Advantages of automated distribution
Rules-driven content distribution offers several advantages over manual content distribution:
- Pro-active distribution of content before it is needed - "push" instead of "pull"
- Bandwidth savings: content is sent at wire speed, at off-peak times
- Version control and replication over groups of destinations
- Consistent, accurate, timely content distribution without supervision
- Simple graphical interface allows users without systems-level expertise to perform routine tasks
- Repeatability
- Standardization across multiple departments or organizations
Components of distributed architecture
ContentDirector has a distributed architecture based on the following components:
- The core application runs at a central location and provides command and control over ContentDirector resources
- The management console provides a graphical user interface to the core application. You can run the management console directly from the system where the core application is resident, or remotely via a browser applet.
- ContentDirector agents (CDAs) are installed on nodes at the periphery of the network. Agents act as content destinations or as pass-through points to control content flow.
