Setting up content distribution resources

Setting content distribution preferences

Purposes of setting preferences  Top

Preferences create standard settings for many fields in ContentDirector screens. They serve two purposes:

Types of preferences  Top

Global content distribution preferences are set by a system administrator. They apply to all users in ContentDirector. Only a system administrator can change or override global preferences.

User content distribution preferences are set by any user. They apply only to the user who set them. That user can manually override them in any instance where they apply.

Setting global preferences  Top

ContentDirector has three global content distribution preferences: network segment refresh rate, job workspace, and content mime types. These settings are visible only to system administrators.

To set these preferences, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Log on as a system administrator.

2

Select File > Preferences.

3

Click the Jobs tab.

The workspace setting at the bottom of this tab is a global preference. This workspace is used by all ContentDirector jobs, unless a system administrator changes the individual job workspace.

You can use the current workspace preference, or select a different workspace.

To select a different workspace, under Workspace, click Browse and choose the location in the local file system.

Note
Moving the workspace to a different drive reduces local disk space usage. See Reducing local disk space requirements for details. You can select a Network Appliance filer or a mapped our mounted drive as your workspace. The core application machine must have administrative or root access to the drive that contains the workspace. For detailed instructions, see Appendix E, Mapped Drive Permissions.

4

Click the Network tab.

In the field next to Network segment refresh rate, enter in minutes how often you want transport group leaders to report to the core application with a list of group members and their statuses.

Setting too frequent an interval for the network segment refresh rate can slow down ContentDirector, because the reports use application resources. Set the refresh rate to an interval that can catch changes in the status of group leaders without excessively slowing other functions, for example, once a minute.

Note
The default rate of 0 means that no automatic refresh is performed. Fill in the refresh rate unless you want users to perform all network segment reports manually.

5

Click the Cache tab.

The scrolling list contains mime types recognized by ContentDirector. Mime identifiers are sent with these files to ensure they are correctly recognized by the destination and by end user applications. For a printed list of mime types included with ContentDirector at shipment, see Appendix D, Default Mime Types.

  • To add mime types, click New.
  • To delete or modify, click the file extension on the scrolling list, then click Delete or Edit.
  • To undo your changes to this list and restore the standard list of mime types, click Restore Default.
6

Click OK to save your preferences.

Setting user preferences  Top

To set user preferences, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Log in as the user who will use these preferences.

2

Click File > Preferences.

3

Click the Job tab.

Under file types to exclude and include, you can make the job screen reflect your strategy for types of files to distribute:

  • To distribute any type of file, leave both fields blank.
  • To exclude only a few types of files, and distribute all others, enter the types to exclude in the File Types To Exclude field.
  • To include only a few types of files, and exclude all others, enter the types to include in the File Types To Include field.
  • To enter a file type, type its extension into the desired field.
  • If you enter multiple types, separate them by a semicolon, with no space. For example:

    .exe;.html;.jpeg;.zip

    Note
Be sure to include file types you plan to distribute in your mime types. For more information, see Setting global preferences.

4

Click the Policy tab.

Under File Types Not Compressed, add file types you want to exclude from compression in jobs where compression is activated. These are typically file formats that are already compressed. The default list includes common graphics, media, and archive formats.

If you enter multiple types, separate them by a semicolon, with no space. For example:

.gif;.jpg

5

Under SMTP Host, enter the name of the default mail server to use if you plan to automatically email contacts about the final status of jobs.

6

Under Sent By, enter the default name to write in the From field when sending job status emails.

7

Click OK to save your preferences.
