Capabilities and limitations of the API

The ContentDirector API provides a Java interface to automate the scheduling and creation of jobs. It specifically supports the ContentDirector features that relate to running jobs, including

Opening and closing the connection to the ContentDirector database
Retrieving the predefined components of a job
Retrieving predefined jobs
Creating new jobs from the predefined components
Running jobs: distributing content according to the parameters specified by the job

After the API retrieves a job or job component object and its ID number, it can also retrieve the parameters of that object.

Because the API is specifically focused on jobs, it does not offer full access to other features of ContentDirector. The API enables you to retrieve policies, destination groups, and destinations and their respective parameters, but not to create or modify them. Because you cannot create or modify these components in the API, they must be defined in the ContentDirector user interface before you run the application that uses the API.
