Planning for ContentDirector agent configuration
Information to gather for CDA configuration
ContentDirector agent configuration will require less time if you make some decisions and gather some information before you start configuring the CDA. Determine the following:
- Whether you want to configure the CDA as a group leader or group member
- The IP address of the core application, if you are configuring a group leader
- The IP address of the group leader, if you are using a unicast network and are configuring a group member
- The IP addresses of any firewalls between the CDA and other ContentDirector devices (for example, the core application, group leaders, and group members)
- The port number to use for core application, if you are configuring a group leader and do not want to use the default port number (8080)
You might need to change the port number if an application uses the same port, for example, RealProxyTM Server, which uses port 8080 for HTTP encapsulation. See Transport port conflicts for more information on reconfiguring the default port.
This section provides information to help you determine the types of information required for your deployment.
The following illustration shows the traffic flow in a typical ContentDirector deployment. See ContentDirector port requirements for more information about ContentDirector port traffic.
ContentDirector port requirements
The following table describes the protocols and ports required for ContentDirector communication.
Protocol

Transport
|
Traffic description
|
Explanation
|
GCDP
|
TCP
|
Sent from the core application to port 3132 on the group leader
Sent from the group leader to port 8080 on the core application
|
The Global Content Distribution Protocol (GCDP) is used to deliver core application commands and data to group leaders.
|
MCTP
|
UDP
|
Sent from the group leader to port 1100 on the group member
|
The Multicast Content Transfer Protocol (MCTP) is used to distribute data from group leaders to group members.
