The following diagram depicts a simplified layout of a satellite based content distribution network.
In the multicast over satellite configuration, the data center and uplink house the core application, content sources, and transport group leader. The transport group members are located at remote offices. They receive multicast messages and respond over a terrestrial back channel.
The group leader to group member communication is MCTP encapsulated by the satellite systems native transport (DVB). The group leader sees the satellite system as a router.
In multicast over satellite, ContentDirector is able to produce maximum scalability, being essentially limited by the amount of feedback the transport group leader can handle. MCTP provides forward error correction (FEC) to further reduce the amount of feedback needed from the transport group members.
If the group leader and group members are behind a firewall, you must configure an outbound hole on the group member side of the firewall, and an inbound NAT hole on the group leader side. Configure the group members with the external NAT'ed address for the group leader.
