When deploying Content Director with NetCache appliances to distribute streaming media files, it is normally necessary that the NetCache appliance have access to a DNS server.
When a client pushes content to the appliance, NetCache tries to ensure that the content will be accessible. One of the ways NetCache enforces this with streaming content is to attempt to generate a fully-qualified domain name for the streaming media server.
This provides NetCache with some measure of confidence that the cache will detect a cache hit regardless of how the client asked for the content (IP address, partially-qualified domain name, etc.) Also, because NetCache must sometimes communicate with the media server before serving cached content, doing this ensures that NetCache contacts the correct media server.
The fully qualified domain also acts as the key that is used to index the cached content.
