Filtering report information with query filters

About using query filters to display specific report information  Top

When creating a new query or editing an existing one, you can use the components on the Query Definitions Filters tab screen to further customize the information displayed in a Table or Graph Query.

About the Filter tab  Top

The Filters tab provides you with another level of granularity to zero-in on specific data elements you want to display in the tables or graphs in your reports. Filter properties are based on the data elements of the selected query.

For each selected data element, you can use the Filters tab to:

Customizing query data elements  Top

Use the following steps to filter query data.

Step

Description

1

At the Query Definition page, select a query. Click on the Edit button.

Result:

The Query Definition Properties page is displayed.

Caution
If you want to modify one of the pre-defined queries and also want to preserve its configuration, copy the pre-defined query, and then modify the copy. There is no option to restore the configuration of a pre-defined query.,

2

Click on the Filter tab. In this screen, you can customize the following types of information associated with each of the data elements in this query. Note that each of the filterable data elements are listed in the column. Select the data element you want to filter.

Result:

The Column Properties fields activate if they are a valid property for the selected data element. Each property is explained in detail in following sections of this table.

Using the Display field  Top

Enables you to specify the number of records in a table. You may specify all records by making this field empty, or by entering a -1 in the Display field.

Using the Filter field  Top

This Filter field enables you to customize the information displayed in reports by a particular column or axis. For example, if you select the "Appliance" data element in the left-hand Selected Columns/Axes panel, and enter a specific cache name in this Filter field, this query will only include information about the particular cache in reports.

Filter Conventions

The following table lists conventions for each of the valid data types you can use in the Filter field of the Filters tab.

Caution
Use care when entering filters. If your enter a value for which no database records exist, the query will be blank in reports. For example, if you misspell a clip name, enter the wrong IP address, or specify a time range for which no data exists, the query will be blank.

Query Filter values and conventions

String data

String data is anything that isn't numeric (for example, Appliance, Host Site, and IP address are strings)

String data filter con-ventions

Special characters:

  • Comma(,): use the comma to specify multiple strings
  • Asterisk (*): use an asterisk as a wildcard
Examples:

  • www.netapp.com - will generate a report on this Site Name or Host Name
  • 12.34.56.* - to generate a report on all users in 12.34.56. subnet
  • *.netapp.com (or HTTP://www.netapp.com) to generate values for the URL data element

Numeric data

Numeric values in the log files (this can be a raw number, a percentage, or a status code (like 404)

ContentReporter also considers Time and Date values as numeric values

Numeric value filter conventions

Special characters:
  • Dash (-): use the dash to specify a range of numeric values
  • Asterisk (*): use an asterisk as a wildcard
Examples:
  • 0-5000 (exact range)
  • *-5000 (no lower limit, upper limit is 5000)
  • 200-* (lower limit is 200 and no upper limit)

Time and Date values

Also treat like numeric values

Values:
  • Date - use the "Short" format for the date i.e., M/d/yyyy.
  • Day of Week - possible values: 1-7 (1= Sunday)
  • Month - possible values: 1-12 (1= Janauary)
  • Quarter - possible values: 1-4 (1 = Jan to March)
  • Hour - possible values: 1-24 (1 = 12am to 1 am)
  • Year - use yyyy (for example 2001)

Time and Date filter conventions

Special characters:
  • Dash (-): use the dash to specify a time or date range
  • Asterisk (*): use an asterisk as a wildcard
Examples:
  • M/d/yyyy like 11/11/2001 for single days data
  • M/d/yyyy-* like 11/1/2001-* for data on or after 11/1/2001 to till date
  • *-M/d/yyyy like *-11/1/2001 for reporting on activity before and including 11/1/2001 this includes 11/1/2001 data also

Using the Sort Order field drop down list  Top

This field lets you specify the sort order (none, ascending, or descending) for records of a particular Table Query column. The specified sort order applies only to the selected column. If you specify the sort order of two or more Table Query columns, the Query sorts on the columns from left to right.

Using the Magnitude field drop down list  Top

This field lets you specify the magnitude of certain numeric data elements. For example, if you select the "File Size" data element in the left-hand Selected Data elements panel, you can select a magnitude in either bytes (none), kilobytes, megabytes or gigabytes from this drop down list. Make sure to change Display name to represent data appropriately.

The following screen illustrates the use of the magnitude field to change the output of the bytes data element from no magnitude to a magnitude of giga. Note the change in each of the circled columns.

Using the Precision field drop down list  Top

This drop-down list lets you specify the Float Point Precision (from 0 to 10) of certain numeric data elements. For example, if you select the "% of Hits" data element in the left-hand Selected Data Elements panel, you can select the Floating Point Precision for values in this column.

Show Column Totals check box  Top

This check box lets you to either show or not show the totals of Table Query columns. To show totals for a column, select the column in the left-hand Selected Columns/Axes panel, and ensure that the "Show Column Totals" check box is checked
