You can configure ContentReporter to collect and process log files saved on a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server. To schedule the collection and processing of these log files, you first add a NetCache appliance to a cache group with which to associate these log files. At each collection event, ContentReporter collects all log files in the specified directory that have more recent time stamps than the newest log file collected during the previous collection event.
Note
ContentReporter only uses standard FTP to collect log files from an FTP server. You cannot use passive mode enabled FTP. As a result, you cannot collect from an FTP server behind a fire wall or Network Address Translation (NAT) box.
Note
ContentReporter can only collect log files from an FTP server that supports UNIX-style file lists. This is the FTP LIST command format. To collect log files from an IIS server, you must configure the FTP server to use the UNIX format. The FTP server cannot use the MS-DOS format.
To add a cache to collect and process log files from an FTP server, complete the following steps.
| 1 | From a page in ContentReporter, click the Administration tab. |
| 2 | |
| 3 | From the Cache Group tab, select a cache group in the left-hand panel, and click New Cache. |
| 4 | In the New Cache window, enter a name for the log file source, click the Collect from FTP Server button, and then click Settings. |
| 5 | In the FTP Settings window, enter the name of the FTP server in the Server field, ensure that the correct port number (such as 21) appears in the Port field, enter the FTP user name and password, enter the name of the folder on the FTP server that contains the log files (such as "/users/jsmith/logs") in the File location field, and then click OK. |
| 6 | If the log files contain no header, select the appropriate check box, and then click the button for the log file's format. |
| 7 | Accept the default location to store this cache's log files, or click Browse, select an appropriate directory, and click OK. |
| 8 | To delete the log files after processing, select the appropriate box. |
| 9 | Accept the default number of error lines (200), or enter another number. If you do not want the number of error lines in a log file to stop the ContentReporter server from processing, enter the number 0. |
| 10 | After you enter all the required information, click OK. Result:You return to the Cache Group tab and the cache appears under the cache group in the left-hand panel. |
| 11 | Click Apply or OK to save your changes. Result:You successfully added a cache to collect and process log files from an FTP server. |
| 12 | Go to Step three: Scheduling log file collection to create a scheduled event to collect and process this cache group's log files. |
