Step one: Defining a cache group
What a cache group is
A cache group is a logically defined group of one of more caches. Caches, in ContentReporter, are the devices that generate the log files that the ContentReporter server collects and processes. A cache group is a management tool that enables you to specify the time and frequency of log file collection, and the type of log file analysis for a number of caches. Defining a cache group is the first step in the process of setting up log file collection.
Note
You can only create scheduled events to collect and process log files from cache groups, not individual caches. If you want to create a scheduled event to collect and process one cache's log files, you need to place it in its own cache group.
Where you access cache group information
You can access cache group information from the following sources:
- Administration page--The Administration page lists all cache groups and caches for which one or more ContentReporter servers are outputting data to your database.
- Administration Cache Group tab--You manage and modify cache groups through the Cache Group tab. You see cache groups listed under ContentReporter servers.
The Administration page
The following screen shows cache groups on the Administration page.
The Cache Group tab
The following screen shows cache groups created with the ContentReporter server on the "bills-nt" machine on the Cache Group tab.
Cache group information you can define
You can define the type of log files to collect and process for each cache group:
- HTTP analysis--HTTP (or Web Access) log files are helpful for tracking the types of objects that are cache hits and misses. They are also helpful for evaluating the load on a NetCache appliance (for example, peak performance and which content is requested at peak times).
- Streaming analysis--Streaming Access log files record client and server information for streaming media connections. Each log entry contains specific connection information that you can use to diagnose and solve problems, optimize performance, and track usage patterns.
- Both
