Configuring database rollups

About database rollups  Top

The database rollup feature gives you the ability to keep a specified number of days of hourly data available for reports in your database. You can also specify the number of days of Billing data and Streaming data to keep available for reports. Using database rollups, you can create a "sliding window" of data available for reports. In most production environments, hourly data is only needed for a week or two. Using database rollups settings, you can get rid of unwanted data on a regular basis and, at the same time, have the ContentReporter server store more information without your database continuing to grow in size. The database rollup activity is a scheduled database background task.

Note
If you disable database rollups, your database will grow in size at approximately the rate of log file processing. Also, if you disable rollups, the ContentReporter server will never update the monthly database tables.

How database rollups work  Top

Database rollups control the size of your database by converting hourly data into monthly data. For example, before a database rollup, you could use the "Activity Level by Hour" query definition to generate a report on the number of hits per hour received by a particular NetCache appliance during the month of May. When the month of May's data is rolled up (for example, in early July), all hourly data for the month of May is cleared from the database. If you wanted to generate a report of the number of hits the cache received in May after the rollup, you could use the "Activity Level by Month" query definition.

The following table describes the Database Rollups properties.

Setting

Description

Rollup Frequency

The frequency of database rollups: Daily, Weekly, or Monthly.

You can specify how often all hourly data in the database that is more than the specified number of days old (in the "number of days to keep hourly data" field) is converted into monthly data.

Use the Set Schedule... button to launch the Rollup Scheduled window to specify the rollup frequency.

Number of days of hourly data to keep

The minimum number of days of hourly data to keep available for reports in your database. Immediately after a database rollup, you have exactly this many days of hourly data in the database. After a rollup, the amount of hourly data in the database increases by one day each day until the next rollup.

For example if you schedule database rollups for the 1st and 15th days of the month, and specify to keep 33 days of hourly data in your database, you will have 33 days of hourly data immediately after the rollup on the 1st of the month, 46 days of hourly data on the 14th day of the month, and then 33 days of hourly data immediately after the rollup on the 15th day of the month.

Number of months of monthly data to keep

The number of months of monthly data to keep available for reports in your database. Immediately after a database rollup, you have exactly this many months of monthly data in the database.

If you set this number to six months and schedule a rollup to occur on October 1st, you will have monthly data available in your database for reports for the months of April through September.

Number of days of billing data to keep

The minimum number of days of billing data to keep available for reports in your database. Immediately after a database rollup, you have exactly this many days of billing data in the database. After a rollup, the amount of billing data in the database increases by one day each day until the next rollup.

Ensure that the number of days of billing data you specify to keep is compatible with your Billing tab settings. To learn more about the Billing tab settings, see Configuring Billing aggregation.

Number of days of Streaming data to keep

The minimum number of days of streaming data to keep available for reports in your database. Immediately after a database rollup, you have exactly this many days of streaming data in the database. After a rollup, the amount of streaming data in the database increases by one day each day until the next rollup.
