Replacing the motherboard

About replacing the motherboard  Top

Only the C2100 has a replaceable motherboard. To replace the motherboard on a C1200, you must replace the entire chassis. To replace the chassis on the C1200 go to Replacing the appliance chassis.

Replacing the motherboard on the C2100 NetCache appliance consists of the following procedures:

Removing the motherboard  Top

To remove the motherboard from the C2100 chassis, complete the following steps, using the figure for reference.

Step

Action

1

Open the appliance, as described in Opening the appliance.

2

Remove the risers and expansion adapters, as described in Removing an expansion adapter.

Note
Do not unplug the NVRAM 4 adapter. Fold the riser to the top of the disk drive housing.

3

Unplug and mark the following cables from the motherboard:

  • SCSI ribbon cable--gray and white cable
  • ATA Flex cable--copper colored ribbon cable
  • Motherboard power cable--large, multicolored plug
  • Aux power cable--small black plug near the main power cable
  • Aux USB cable--round, white cable near the second CPU socket
  • Fan cables--three sets of multicolored cables with small plugs

    Note
For later reference during reinstallation, record the routing location and direction of each of the cables as you unplug and remove them.

4

Remove the ATA Flex cable retaining bracket from the backplane, then remove the chassis fan assembly, as described in Removing a chassis fan from the C2100.

5

Carefully remove the three thumbscrews securing the motherboard to the chassis. (Save the MB clip used to secure the ATA Flex cable.) Then remove the two screws from the back of the chassis directly below the expansion adapter NIC ports, which secure the system ID cover.

6

Lift the edge of the motherboard closest to the disk drives, tilt the motherboard slightly, then slide it toward the front of the chassis, until it clears the lip at the back of the chassis. Lift the motherboard clear of the chassis and place it on an antistatic mat.

7

Remove the DIMMs, as described in Removing a DIMM.

Installing the motherboard--C2100 only  Top

To install a motherboard, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Seat the new motherboard into the chassis, aligning the screw holes in the motherboard and chassis. Secure it to the chassis with the motherboard screws, then attach the two screws on the back of the appliance, below the NIC ports.

2

Using two screws, reattach the system ID cover directly below the expansion adapter ID ports.

3

Plug all power wires and the SCSI ribbon cable into the motherboard.

Caution
Make sure that you match the wires with the correct plugs on the motherboard and have attached the ATA Flex cable retaining bracket.

4

Install the DIMMs, as described in Installing a DIMM.

5

Install the chassis fans, as described in Installing a chassis fan in the C2100.

6

Connect all motherboard cables to their appropriate places on the motherboard.

7

Install the NIC and NVRAM 4 risers, as described in Installing an expansion adapter.

8

Close the appliance, as described in Closing the appliance.

9

Go to Updating the motherboard firmware.
