When you first install your NetCache appliance, the logs are generated in a default log format specific to each log. You can select other predefined formats or customize the log file format to meet your requirements. Most NetCache appliance log files adhere to the Extended Log File Format conventions described by the World Wide Web Consortium (www.w3.org). The Extended Log File Format enables you to add or delete log file headers so you can create customized log files that can be read by generic log analyzers.
In general, you can select two types of log file formats for your log files, predefined formats and custom formats.
When you select a predefined format, you cannot alter the field set of the log (the list of log file headers) to change the information that is reported.
Because each log reports a specific type of information, the predefined formats differ from log to log. However, all of the log formats adhere to the Extended Log File Format conventions described by the World Wide Web Consortium.
When you select a custom format, you modify the field set of a predefined format or create a new format. Because the list of headers is specific to each log, some headers that can be used in the Web access log, for example, cannot be used in the other logs. When you generate the log file, the log headers appear in the order that you entered them.
Note
You cannot customize the Messages log, ContentDirector log, DNS, and FTP transfer access log.
The formats available for each NetCache log file are shown in the following table.
See the Guide to Messages and Log File Entries for details about the headers that are available in the various logs.
