Cloning appliance configurations

Copying a configuration to another appliance  Top

If you do not want to create and maintain a global configuration file, but you want to reuse settings configured on one appliance on other appliances, you can use the config -clone command/parameter combination to quickly copy, or "clone," the configuration of one appliance to another appliance.

With the following procedure, local appliance settings that were specified during appliance setup (such as the host name) are preserved on the local target appliance, even after the copy is completed.

Note
This operation is not automated. Subsequent modifications to the source appliance configuration are not automatically copied to the target appliance.

To clone one appliance configuration to other appliances, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Using the CLI or Appliance Manager, set up the source appliance with the configuration that you want to copy to any target appliance.

2

At the CLI console of the target appliance, enter the config -clone command using the following syntax:

config -clone admn:pw@src_nc_name:src_admn_port

admin is the name of the administrator of the source appliance.

pw is the administrator's password.

src_nc_name is the FQDN of the source appliance.

src_admn_port is the administration port on the source appliance.

For example, the following command line in the ApplianceB CLI console copies the configuration of ApplianceA:

config -clone admin:passwrdz@Appliancea.yurcorp.com:133
3

To confirm that the copy operation is complete, in the CLI console of the target appliance, enter the following command and view the resulting configuration display:

show config.*
4

Use the CLI commands or the Appliance Manager to edit any configuration settings that need to be edited on the target appliance.

Note
Settings specific to the local appliance (such as the host name) that you specified during appliance setup are preserved on the target appliance, even after the copy is completed.

Note
Any comment lines (prefaced with the # character) that are inserted in the source configuration file will not be included in the configuration that is cloned to the target appliance.

Copying a configuration to a global configuration file  Top

You can use the show -clone command/parameter combination to quickly copy, or "clone," the configuration of one appliance to a configuration file that is suitable for use as a global configuration file.

With the following procedure, local appliance settings that were specified during appliance setup (such as the host name) are not copied to the configuration file.

Note
This operation is not automated. Subsequent modifications to the source appliance configuration are not automatically copied to the target appliance.

To clone one appliance configuration to other appliances, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Using the CLI or Appliance Manager, set up the source appliance with the configuration that you want to copy to the configuration file.

2

At the CLI console of the target appliance, enter the show -clone command using the following syntax:

show -clone ftp://ftp.server.com/cache.cfg

where

ftp.server.com is the name of the FTP server.

cache.cfg is the name of the configuration file.

3

If you do not want to propagate all of the cloned configuration settings, edit the file to contain only the settings that you want to apply to your appliances.

4

On each appliance that you want to use the global configuration file, specify the following on the Setup tab > System > Automatic Configuration page in the Appliance Manager:

  • The location of each global configuration file in the Automatic Configuration Files list
  • The interval at which you want the appliance to read the listed multiple-cache configuration files
