When protocol tunneling is deployed in a nontransparent environment, the NetCache protocol tunneling feature is configured to listen on a specific NetCache appliance IP address and port for a particular type of nonstandard traffic. When NetCache receives the nonstandard traffic on this IP address and port, NetCache creates a tunnel to the server IP address and server port identified in the protocol tunneling feature. For this type of deployment, you must provide a mapping of a specific NetCache IP address and port pair to a specific server IP address and port pair.
When protocol tunneling is deployed in a transparent environment, the L4 or L7 switch or WCCP router is configured to direct traffic for a nonstandard port to the NetCache appliance. The NetCache protocol tunneling feature is configured to listen for traffic on the nonstandard port and to create a tunnel to the server port identified in the protocol tunneling feature when it accepts the nonstandard traffic on the appliance port. For this type of deployment, you must provide a mapping of a specific NetCache port to a specific server port.
In a transparent environment, in addition to configuring the protocol tunneling feature, you must perform the following configuration:
See Chapter 11, Transparent Proxying, for more information about setting up WCCP service groups.
Configure the switch to send all traffic for a particular nonstandard port to the NetCache appliance.
