Distributing load based on appliance platform type

Adjusting request distribution based on weighting  Top

The WCCP Assignment Weighting Factor option (Setup tab > Transparency > WCCP > Global Settings) enables you to influence the amount of traffic sent to the appliance. The WCCP router uses this weighting factor, in conjunction with other basic request distribution criteria that you have provided, to determine the amount of traffic sent to this appliance. For example, if your deployment includes a C1100 and a C6100, you might want to specify weighting criteria so that the C6100, which can handle more requests, receives a greater portion of requests than the C1100. (You can set a weighting factor only for the appliance you are currently configuring. To set weighting factors for multiple appliances, you must configure each appliance separately.)

Each appliance can be assigned a weighting number between 0 and 255. For example, assume you set the following weights:

NetCache A: 255

NetCache B: 110

NetCache C: 75

The WCCP router adds the weights together to find a total and divides the traffic appropriately. In the preceding example, NetCache A receives 58 percent of the redirected traffic, NetCache B receives 25 percent of the redirected traffic, and NetCache C receives 17 percent of the redirected traffic.

The WCCP Assignment Weighting Factor setting works only with appliances. If your WCCP deployment contains appliances running releases earlier than 5.1 or third-party proxy-cache servers, you should set the weighting value to 0 (zero).
