Solving common NetCache configuration problems
Most common configuration problems
The most common configuration problems that can affect Web cache service are
- A damaged configuration file
- A misconfigured network interface
- A misconfigured IP address
Configuration file issues
Booting when the configuration file is damaged
If you cannot boot the NetCache appliance and you suspect the cause is a configuration error, try booting from the system boot diskette. For more information, see Booting from the system boot media.
Recovering from a damaged configuration file
If a NetCache configuration was damaged, replace the file with a backup copy.
You can restore a saved version of the configuration through the Appliance Manager or replace it from the console using the command line. See the topics on backing up and restoring a system configuration file in the Appliance Manager online Help for more information.
Multiple cache administration
If you restore a configuration file that other NetCache appliances read for configuration updates, you can instruct those appliances to refresh their configurations immediately to avoid further configuration problems.
Network interface issues
Run the ifconfig command from the console to reconfigure an interface. See Configuring an interface using the ifconfig command for more information.
IP address misconfiguration issues
If you can access the NetCache appliance from the console, but not from an administration workstation, the NetCache appliance might have an IP address that is unreachable.
To fix the IP address misconfiguration problem, complete the following steps.
Step
|
Action
|
|
1 |
Log in to the NetCache appliance from the system console.
|
|
2 |
At the NetCache appliance prompt, enter the following command:
ifconfig interface_name IP_address netmask netmask
where interface_name is the name of the interface for which you are configuring the IP address and netmask is the subnet mask of the network to which this NetCache appliance is connected.
Note Changing the configuration from the command line makes temporary changes. It does not affect the saved NetCache configuration. The saved NetCache configuration is reapplied the next time the system is booted. You can, however, use the ifconfig -set options command to make the change permanent. |
|
3 |
From an administration workstation, start a browser and point it to the Appliance Manager.
|
|
4 |
Check the Network - Interfaces page (Setup tab > Network > Interfaces) to make sure that the network interfaces are configured correctly. Specifically, check the IP address and netmask.
|
|
5 |
If the "Only from These Hosts and Networks" option on the Administrative Access page (Setup tab > Administration > Administrative Access) is selected, make sure that the host you are working from is included in the list of hosts allowed.
