Determining why you cannot access a specific URL
What to check
If NetCache is servicing requests for URLs, but you are experiencing problems accessing a specific URL, try requesting the URL either directly from the Web server or through the NetCache appliance using the telnet command.
Note
You can request a URL directly from a Web server only if your network is set up to allow direct access to the Web server. If your network is set up so that all HTTP requests must pass through your NetCache appliance, requesting a URL directly from the Web server will not work because NetCache will intercept the request.
Requesting a URL directly from a Web server
To request a URL directly from a Web server, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
1 |
From a workstation, use the telnet command to access a Web server. For example:
telnet www.netapp.com 80
where 80 is the port number on the Web server. If your network is set up so that you can request a URL directly from a Web server, access to Web server www.netapp.com should be successful.
2 |
Use the GET command to request the HTML source at the root of the Web server. For example:
GET / HTTP/1.0
3 |
Press Enter twice.
4 |
If...
Then...
The HTML source information begins scrolling up the screen
The Web server is up.
The source of the problem is either NetCache or the network.
If you see an HTTP return error code, check an HTTP reference for descriptions of these return values.
The HTML source information is not returned
The source of the problem is the Web server.
Requesting a URL through the NetCache appliance
To request a URL through the NetCache appliance, complete the following steps.
Step
Action
1 |
From a workstation, use the telnet command to access the NetCache appliance. For example:
telnet hostname proxy_port
where hostname is the name of the NetCache appliance and proxy_port is the HTTP Proxy Ports option setting in the HTTP - General page (Setup tab > HTTP > General). The default is 3128.
2 |
After you access the NetCache using Telnet, enter the GET command to request a URL that you know exists. For example:
GET http://www.netapp.com/ HTTP/1.0
3 |
Press Enter.
4 |
If...
Then...
The HTML source information begins scrolling up the screen
The NetCache appliance is operating normally. If you see an HTTP return error code, check an HTTP reference for descriptions of these return values.
The HTML source information is not returned
Make sure that the NetCache appliance can send requests outside the firewall.
