Troubleshooting from the console

Using the NetCache appliance command line  Top

To access the Appliance Manager, the NetCache appliance must first be accessible from a host running a Web browser. If you cannot access the Appliance Manager, you might need to use the NetCache appliance command line.

You can use the NetCache appliance command line directly at the console or by establishing a Telnet session to the NetCache appliance. You can also access the console through a Telnet session if you have a terminal server setup.

Note
Making configuration changes from the console puts the NetCache appliance configuration out of synchronization with the Appliance Manager. The Appliance Manager reapplies its configuration at the next system boot.

Both the console and a Telnet session to the console provide access to a single console session. That is, everything entered through the Telnet session is echoed at the console, and vice versa. Only one Telnet session can be open at a time.

If you are using the telnet command to log out from the NetCache appliance, press Ctrl-], then press Ctrl-D to log out of the Telnet session.

About the console password  Top

Although Telnet and the console share the same session, each prompts you for a password. Both console and Telnet connections use the same password. This password is referred to as the console password.

During initial system setup, the console password required to log in to the console or establish a Telnet connection with the NetCache appliance is created. You can change this password only through the console command line by using the passwd command. The passwd command prompts for the old password, if any, then requests the new password twice.

Using the sysstat command to get the system status  Top

Entering the sysstat command at the NetCache appliance's console or the command line provides the following information:

An example of sysstat output for a system is as follows:

cache2> sysstat 2
 CPU    URLs/s   Net kB/s Disk kB/s       BW savings/s
tot hit miss  in out    read   write
  2% 0 0    0   0 0     16 24   0%
  0%     0     0    0   0 0      6 7   0%
  1%     0     0    0   0      0     10     16   0%
  0%     0     0    0   0      0      5 8   0%

The following table shows the action to take when you identify problems examining the sysstat output.

No network traffic

Check the NetCache appliance's interface configuration using the ifconfig command.

See Configuring an interface using the ifconfig command for more information.

Using the config command to manipulate the NetCache configuration  Top

In case of disaster, you can use the config command to manipulate the NetCache appliance configuration from the console command line. By using the config command, you can create a backup configuration, revert to a previous configuration, delete an old configuration, clear the current configuration, and clone a configuration file from another NetCache appliance.

Use the config command options as follows, where config_file is the name of the backup configuration file:

Syntax 1:
config -n
Syntax 2:
config [-z | -Z]
Syntax 3:
config [-c | -d | -v] config_file
Syntax 4:
config -r [-global | -detach] [-skip] config_file
Syntax 5:
config -clone user:password@cache:port

Option

Description

-n

Downloads and recompiles the configuration files listed in the config.admin.config.list option.

-z

Restores the configuration to default values

-Z

Clears the current configuration. No configuration will exist upon a reboot.

-c

Backs up the current configuration to a named file.

You can also use the config_backup command.

-d

Deletes the named configuration file.

-v

Displays the named configuration file.

-r

Restores the named configuration file locally.

You can also use the config_restore command.

-r

-global

Restores the named configuration file to all sources.

-r

-detach

Detaches the cache from remote servers.

-r

-skip

Skips invalid values in the backup file.

-clone

Clones the configuration of another NetCache appliance to this NetCache appliance.
