Redirection methods available with a GRM server

GRM supports two different redirection methods for GRM servers:

DNS-based redirection services (GRM DNS server)
Application-level (L7) redirection services (GRM L7 server)

When you configure a NetCache appliance as a GRM server, you configure general GRM server options plus specific options for the type of redirection that you need. Depending on your redirection requirements, you might deploy all GRM DNS servers, all GRM L7 servers, or a combination of the two types of GRM servers (a mixed hierarchy). Typically, multiple GRM servers are deployed for redundancy.

In this guide the term "GRM server" is used when the information applies to both GRM DNS servers and GRM L7 servers. The type of GRM server is specified if the information applies to only one type of GRM server.

General GRM server functions

GRM server functions include the following:

Maintains authority and responsibility for a set of configured domains called GRM domains. You identify these domains when you configure the server and, if desired, set filtering policies on location and protocols handled.
Communicates with GRM agent caches, obtaining proximity and status information from the agents.
Determines which GRM agent cache IP addresses to return in response to a DNS query (if the server is a GRM DNS server) or a client request (if the server is a GRM L7 server).
