Halting, rebooting, and powering down the appliance

When to use halt and reboot  Top

The Appliance Manager provides a way to halt and reboot the appliance cleanly.

When to use halt

Use the Halt Appliance option if you want to stop the appliance from serving requests and do not want it to restart itself. This method is useful if you want to power down the appliance or if you want to boot the system from the system boot diskette.

When to use reboot

Use the Reboot Appliance option if you want to halt the appliance and reboot it in one step.

Powering down the appliance  Top

Always halt the appliance before powering down the system. Perform the Halt Appliance operation on the Halt / Reboot page (Maintenance tab > System Control > Halt / Reboot) or run the halt command from the CLI.

Caution
Failure to properly shut down the appliance can result in data loss.

Unplugging the power cable from the appliance  Top

If you need to unplug the appliance power cable for any reason, for example, you need to move the appliance, make sure to halt the system and ensure that the LCD displays Halted before you unplug the cable.

Which disk the system boots from  Top

If the appliance has a boot diskette in its diskette drive, it boots from the diskette; otherwise, it boots from the hard disk.
