About controlling access to streaming media

Streaming ACLs  Top

Streaming ACL options enable you to set access controls for the streaming media features of your NetCache. Streaming bandwidth management, and cacheability rules perform ongoing regulation of streaming connections so that you can control

Rules to control client access to streaming media can be created using all of the standard access control variables.

Example

To deny client 128.126.10.40 requests for streams, specify the following:

deny client-ip 128.126.10.40

Standard NetCache ACLs, however, cannot be used to manage bandwidth or cacheability because these parameters are not known until after an initial connection has been established. Bandwidth and cacheability rules are evaluated after connection setup and are periodically reevaluated throughout the duration of a streaming connection.

Note
The access control settings that you commit on the Setup tab > Access Control > Access Control Lists page are reflected in the ACL settings options on the Setup tab > Streaming > General page.

Variables for controlling streaming media  Top

The streaming bandwidth management and cacheability variables enable you to control the bit rates used to access streaming content.

The variables listed in the following table are restricted in their use because they apply only to streaming media.

Variable

Description

bitrate <bitrate-range>

Streaming content consumes bandwidth within bit-rate range.

cacheable

Streaming content is cacheable.

  • All live streams are not cacheable.
  • All on-demand streams are cacheable.

cached

Streaming content is already cached.

live

Streaming requests for live content.

splittable

Streaming content is splittable.

Controlling streaming bandwidth  Top

Streaming bandwidth rules enable you to enforce strict bandwidth policies on your network.

You cannot enter streaming bandwidth rules in standard ACLs. Bandwidth rules can only be entered in the Streaming Bandwidth Management Rules box on the Setup > Streaming > General page.

Controlling streaming cacheability  Top

Streaming cacheability rules perform ongoing regulation of streaming connections so that you can control the content that the NetCache stores on disk.

You cannot enter streaming cacheability rules in standard ACLs. Cacheability rules can only be entered in the Streaming Cacheability Rules box on the Setup > Streaming > Caching Behavior page.

Note
For detailed information about bitrate and cacheable settings to control client access to streaming content, see the chapter on configuring NetCache for streaming media in the Guide to Caching Protocols and Services.
