Section G: Joining a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain

About this section  Top

This section describes the two ways in which you can join a NetCache appliance to a Microsoft Windows 2000 domain, also known as an Active Directory (AD) domain, in order to authenticate clients using either the Kerberos or NTLM protocols.

Before you use the Authentication - NTLM and Kerberos page in the Appliance Manager to enable the protocols, you must include the appliance in the Microsoft Windows domain.

You can use the Domain Name Service (DNS) to discover services within the domain or you can bypass DNS and directly connect to the domain controller in order to authenticate to the domain.

Preliminary notes on Windows 2000 machine accounts  Top

Microsoft Windows 2000 hosts create their own machine accounts using the credentials of an Administrator user account. The Microsoft Windows 2000 machine account must match exactly its DNS name. Be aware that in a Microsoft Windows 2000 mixed-mode domain, the host cannot have a NetBIOS name that is different from its DNS name.
