Acceleration setup procedure

Setting up the appliance as an accelerator  Top

To set up Web or streaming acceleration, complete the following steps.

Task

Description

1

In the Appliance Manager, select Setup tab > Network > Interfaces.

2

Use the Primary IP Address option to set up your accelerator primary IP address.

Network Appliance recommends that you reassign the IP address and host name of the Web or streaming server, and assign the accelerator the IP address and host name previously assigned to the Web or streaming server. This enables the appliance to receive the HTTP and streaming media requests intended for the origin server.

Note
If the appliance is being set up as a streaming MMS accelerator, you must reassign the IP address of the streaming MMS server, and assign to the accelerator the IP address that was previously assigned to the streaming MMS server.

3

If you want your accelerator to provide acceleration support for multiple Web or streaming servers, configure multiple IP aliases.

Use the Aliases option to configure a single interface on the accelerator with multiple IP aliases (in addition to the accelerator's primary IP address).

4

Select Setup tab > System > Host Name to set up your accelerator host name.

  • If you are setting up the appliance as a Web accelerator, rename the Web server and assign the accelerator the name that was previously assigned to the Web server.

From the user perspective, communication occurs directly with the Web server. The URL that users enter is the same as the URL that previously belonged to the Web server.

  • If you are setting up the appliance as a streaming RTSP accelerator, rename the streaming RTSP server and assign the accelerator the name that was previously assigned to the streaming server.

    Note
Streaming MMS servers are accessed only by IP address. Therefore, if the appliance is being set up for streaming MMS acceleration, the host name can be arbitrarily assigned.

5

If you support client access to the accelerator through DNS, configure your DNS servers as follows:

  • Associate your current Web or streaming RTSP accelerator host name with its current IP address.
  • Associate your current Web or streaming server host names with their current IP addresses or IP aliases.
  • If you are providing acceleration support for multiple Web or streaming servers, define multiple virtual accelerator host names and associate them with the IP aliases that you set up in Task 2.

    Note
Streaming MMS servers are accessed only by IP address, not host name; therefore, no DNS configuration applies to the streaming MMS servers or to the streaming MMS accelerators.

For more details on DNS configurations supporting acceleration, see DNS configuration to support an accelerator.

6

Use the following options to specify the ports through which this accelerator will receive requests.

  • If you are setting up a Web accelerator, select Setup tab > HTTP > General and use the HTTP Proxy Ports option to specify the ports through which this accelerator will receive HTTP requests. Configure one proxy port setting to port 80 so that the Web accelerator, which has essentially become the Web server, can listen on the same port (80) for requests.
  • If you are setting up an RTSP streaming media accelerator, select Setup tab > Streaming > RTSP and use the RTSP Port option to specify the ports through which this accelerator will receive requests.
  • If you are setting up an MMS streaming media accelerator, no port setting option is available. The fixed port is 1755.

If you are setting up a Web accelerator:

  • Select Setup tab > HTTP > Web Server Acceleration > Rules tab > New Rule. Specify the Web server or servers to accelerate, and assign the accelerator or virtual accelerator hosts on this appliance to accelerate them.

For details, click the Help icon.

  • Select Setup tab > HTTP > Web Server Acceleration > General tab and set up specific options as follows:
    • Web Accelerator Enable--Enable the Web accelerator function.
    • Web Server Accelerator ACL--Specify ACL rules to apply to this accelerator.

For details, click the Help icon.

8

If you are setting up a streaming accelerator:

  • Select Setup tab > Streaming > Streaming Server Acceleration > Rules tab > New Rule. Specify the streaming server or servers to accelerate, and assign the accelerator or virtual accelerator hosts on this appliance to accelerate them.

For details, click the Help icon.

  • Select Setup tab > Streaming > Streaming Server Acceleration > General tab and set up specific options as follows:
    • Streaming Server Acceleration Enable--Enable the streaming accelerator function.
    • Streaming Server Acceleration ACL--Specify ACL rules to apply to this accelerator.

For details, click the Help icon.
