NNTP License  Top

Before you configure any of the news cache options, you must have installed a valid NNTP license on the NetCache appliance. If you do not have an NNTP license, contact your Network Appliance sales engineer or the Installed Base Group (ibg@netapp.com).

You can install the NNTP license during the initial setup or later, before you configure other news cache options.

NNTP Enable  Top

This option enables or disables the NetCache appliance NNTP service.

Article Posting Enable  Top

This option is a global setting that enables and disables the capability of clients to post articles through the news cache. However, the news server actually controls whether clients can post articles to particular newsgroups. Therefore, even if this option is enabled, the news server might prevent an individual client from posting articles.

If this option is disabled, no users using the news cache can post articles to the news server.

If this news cache points to another news cache, be sure to set this option the same way on both NetCache appliances. Otherwise, even if the news server allows posting, users of the news cache service will not be able to post articles.

NNTP Port  Top

In this option, you enter the port number on which this NetCache appliance handles NNTP traffic. The default NNTP port number is 119. You can change the NNTP port number to any other number.

NNTP Server  Top

In this option, you specify the IP address of the news server or another news cache that will resolve cache misses for this news cache. If you are entering the news server IP address and your news server components are running on different machines, enter the IP address of the Reader server.

You must also enter the port on the server or other news cache that listens for NNTP requests. Typically, the NNTP port is 119. If the server or other news cache is using a port other than 119 for NNTP, enter this port in this option.

NNTP Welcome Banner  Top

In this option, you enter a text string, included in the connect banner, which is sent to a client and displayed when a user logs in to the news cache service. For example:

200 NetCache welcomes you to news - posting ok

The line begins with a result code and ends with an explanation of the result code. The result code is either 200 (posting ok) or 201 (posting not ok).

NNTP ACL  Top

In this option, you can apply access controls explicitly to authenticated users or to individuals as part of a group. If this news cache points to another news cache (that is, if you have entered the IP address of another news cache in the NNTP Server option), configure access control only on this news cache (the "lower-level" cache).

X-Trace-PostClient-IP Header Enable  Top

Enabling this option causes the header "X-Trace-PostClient-IP:" to be generated when a client that is running an NNTP session through this appliance posts an article.

The news server can use this header to track spammers.

Authenticate NNTP Requests  Top

Enabling this option imposes authentication requirements to service NNTP requests through this NetCache appliance. For news caching, you can use any of the authentication mechanisms that NetCache supports--the NetCache user database, the LDAP server, the RADIUS server, or the NTLM authentication protocol. If this news cache points to another news cache (that is, if you have entered the IP address of another news cache in the NNTP Server option), configure authentication only on this news cache (the "lower-level" cache).

Canceled Article Time-To-Live  Top

In this option, you specify the number of seconds that you want to elapse before, upon user request, NetCache checks the host specified in the NNTP Server option to determine if an article in the cache was canceled. If the news cache points to a higher level news cache, the setting of the Canceled Article Time-To-Live option is the total of the values set for this option on all of the news caches.

NNTP Refresh Rate  Top

In this option, you enter the number of seconds to elapse before NetCache checks the host specified in the NNTP Server option for new and deleted articles in a newsgroup. If the news cache points to a higher level news cache, the NNTP Refresh Rate time period is the total of the values set for this option on all of the news caches.

Note
A new article is an article that has been posted recently on the news server and is not yet cached in the news cache. A deleted article is an article that has been deleted by the news server because it exceeded the server's specified expiration time.
