Determining the configuration requirements
Decisions to be made
After you have planned for the network deployment configuration of your NetCache appliance, you should decide how you want to configure your appliance to function as a news cache on your network.
While you read this chapter, you will determine whether you want to do the following:
- Allow article posting through the news cache
- Identify a news server or another news cache to resolve cache misses for this news cache
- Apply access controls explicitly to authenticated users or to individuals as part of a group
- Impose authentication requirements to service NNTP requests through this news cache
- Configure the appliance to generate a trace header each time a client uses the news cache to post an article, which enables the news server to track spammers
- Specify the number of seconds to elapse before NetCache checks the host to determine whether a cached article was canceled
- Specify the number of seconds to elapse before NetCache checks the host for new and deleted articles
- Include a welcome message in the connect banner that is sent to clients when users log in to the news cache service
- Select the format in which log files are written
NNTP license requirement
Before you configure the NetCache appliance as a news cache, ensure that you install a valid NNTP license on the appliance. If you do not have an NNTP license, contact your Network Appliance sales representative or the Installed Base Group (ibg@netapp.com).
