NetCache running as a news cache caches the following:
Overview data is header information about the article that includes the message ID (the unique identifier for the article), date, and subject.
The group list is a list of available newsgroups. Each line in the list includes the name of the newsgroup, the first and last known article in the newsgroup, and a flag indicating whether the server allows posting articles to the newsgroup.
The group information consists of the numbers of the first and last articles in the group and an estimate of the number of articles in the group.
Caution
Group information is cached in volatile memory. Group information is lost if the NetCache appliance is rebooted.
NetCache caches the entire article that the client requested, that is, the header and the body. The article header usually contains more detailed information about the article than is available from the News OverView data.
NetCache proxies commands for which it receives only partial data, for example, NEWNEWS, and sends them to the server. NetCache does not cache commands sent by the news server.
You cannot change which news objects NetCache caches. However, you can modify how often NetCache checks with the news server to determine whether new articles have been posted, and you can modify how often NetCache checks to see if an article in its cache has been canceled. This enables you to determine how consistent you want NetCache to be with the news server.
The following sections provide information about changing these settings.
