QuickTime streaming requirements

QuickTime port requirements for transparent redirection  Top

To enable transparent proxying, you must configure the NetCache appliance, switches, or routers for QuickTime (RTSP) traffic. The recommended port numbers for transparent redirection of QuickTime traffic are as follows:

The preceding port list includes all ports that must be redirected for multicasting.

Open the UDP ports on the firewall  Top

To stream QuickTime, you must open UDP ports on the firewall. These ports correspond to the port range listed in the UDP Port Range option in the Appliance Manager.

Firewall requirements for QuickTime streaming  Top

The following table describes the ports that should be opened to enable TCP and UDP QuickTime streaming traffic to pass through your firewall.

Firewall location

Minimum suggested ports to open on firewall

Result if ports are not opened

Located between NetCache and the server

TCP 554
UDP range (destined for NetCache and in the port range specified in the UDP Port Range option)
TCP 80
TCP 7070

If you do not allow TCP or UDP, NetCache uses TCP 80 for server-side HTTP encapsulation. NetCache caches and splits HTTP-encapsulated streaming content.

Located between NetCache and clients

TCP 554
UDP 2000
UDP 2001
TCP 80
TCP 7070

If you do not allow TCP 554, clients use TCP port 80 for client-side HTTP encapsulation.

See Streaming media protocol details for descriptions of the protocols associated with the streaming media ports.

About TCP port 7070  Top

To allow QuickTime HTTP encapsulation in a transparent proxying deployment, you must redirect TCP port 7070. However, TCP port 7070 is not included in the list of Well Known Ports (ports 0 to 1023) and might be used for other applications. Therefore, you should redirect TCP port 7070 only when you can ensure that the correct port traffic is being received, for example, in streaming acceleration or CDN deployments.

QuickTime multicasting support  Top

Multicast streaming for QuickTime is not currently supported.
