What discovery is

ApplianceWatch utilizes rules that discover storage controllers, their associated objects, and their configurations so that you can monitor the state of each object and troubleshoot where necessary.

The main discovery rule (Data ONTAP: Discovery Rule) is disabled by default as recommended by Microsoft. After importing the management pack, you can enable this rule on a Microsoft System Center Operations Manager management server by overriding the setting and selecting the management server that manages Data ONTAP objects.

If your storage system is running a Data ONTAP version earlier than 7.3, you must use SNMP version 1 for discovery rule support. If your storage system is running Data ONTAP 7.3 and later, SNMP versions 1, 2C, and 3 are supported for use with ApplianceWatch discovery rules.

ApplianceWatch ignores traditional volumes during the discovery process.

  You can use storage discovery, PRO discovery, and MetroCluster discovery to discover storage controllers and their associated objects in each type.
• Expediting storage discovery
  If you choose not to wait for the automated discovery process, which runs every four hours, or you have modified the storage systems being monitored, you can expedite the process by manually running storage discovery.
