Syslog is an event-logging facility patterned after the BSD syslog. Messages are ranked by severity, with EMERGENCY (0) as the highest severity and DEBUG (7) as the lowest. The full set of codes is EMERGENCY, ALERT, CRITICAL, ERROR, WARNING, NOTICE, INFO, and DEBUG. By default, the filer puts all messages except DEBUG level messages in /etc/log/messages. This file is rolled over weekly for six weeks into /etc/log/messages.1, /etc/log/messages.2 and so on successively.
You can change what gets logged and how long logs are kept in /etc/syslog.conf. The SAG (System Administration Guide) has a section on how to do all this. There are also man pages on syslogd and syslog.conf. The technical description of this feature is in RFC 3164.
Additional technical information may be found in the man pages for syslog, syslog.conf, syslogd and logger on most Unix systems. A useful CERT document on configuring syslog is mostly applicable to Netapp systems.
