Disk allocation considerations
Resources you should consider when you plan disk allocation on the storage system include RAID groups, hot spare disks, and aggregates.
More information
- RAID group configuration
Plan RAID groups carefully to ensure the best performance and availability of data on your storage system .
- Hot spare disks
A hot spare disk should always be available on your storage system in the event that an active disk fails.
- How many hot spares you should have
At a minimum, you should have at least one matching or appropriate hot spare available for each kind of disk installed in your storage system. However, having two available hot spares for all disks provides the best protection against disk failure.
- How you use aggregates to provide storage to your volumes
To support the differing security, backup, performance, and data sharing needs of your users, you group the physical data storage resources on your storage system into one or more aggregates. These aggregates provide storage to the volumes that they contain.
