Remote verification

Benefit of remote verification  Top

Database verification is CPU-intensive for the host running the verification. To prevent verification from affecting the performance of your production Exchange server, you can run verification on another computer.

Overview of remote verification  Top

Remote verification is performed using the same mechanisms used for local verification, except that the verification is performed on a different host than the one that initiated the backup. This is why you need SnapDrive and SnapManager installed on your remote verification server, as well as connectivity to the filer (FCP or iSCSI).

The process followed for remote verification is outlined in the following table.

Task

Process

1

The SnapManager backup with verification (or verification only) is initiated on the primary SnapManager host, which is configured to run verifications on the remote verification server.

2

The primary SnapManager host contacts the remote verification server and initiates the verification job.

3

The remote verification server uses SnapDrive to create a LUN backed by the snapshot containing the databases to be verified.

4

The remote verification server performs the database verification on the LUN backed by snapshot.

5

When the remote verification server completes the verification, it sends the results back to the primary SnapManager host.

Note
Whether you run verification remotely or locally, the verification is performed on a LUN backed by snapshot. If you take a snapshot of the same volume while a LUN backed by snapshot exists, you create a "busy snapshot," which might cause problems when you attempt to delete some snapshots. For this reason, you must be careful not to schedule backups while a verification is in progress.

The connectivity required to perform remote verification is shown in the following diagram:

Designating a remote verification server  Top

To designate a remote verification server, complete the following steps on the production Exchange server.

Step

Action

1

On the production Exchange server, from the SnapManager main menu, select Options > Database Verification Setting.

2

Enter or browse to the name of the system you want to run verification on and click OK.

Result

From now on, until you change this setting, verification is run from the system you selected.
