Using Run Command After Operation to archive automatically

About the Run Command After Operation feature  Top

SnapManager 3.1 for Microsoft Exchange includes the capability to automatically run a command after a backup or verification is complete. The command-line parameters can be inserted based on the components of the backup or verification. This feature, called Run Command After Operation, enables you to automatically archive a backup.

Note
The command is run only after a successful backup or verification. If the backup is not completed successfully, or if the verification fails, the command is not run.

Types of SnapManager variables  Top

To support the automatic archiving of a backup, which creates snapshots with variable names, SnapManager 3.1 for Microsoft Exchange provides the following SnapManager variables:

Example

In the following example, the script C:\SnapManagerScripts\scriptname would be invoked with the following parameters:

The corresponding Run Command After Operation dialog box would look like this:

For more examples of command lines and scripts that use the SnapManager variables, see the examples for these archiving methods:

Running a command after backup or verification  Top

To run a command or invoke a batch file after backup or verification, complete the following steps.

Caution
Make sure that you archive all components of a backup set together. For more information about SnapManager backup sets, see SnapManager backup sets and SnapManager snapshot naming conventions.

Step

Action

1

When setting up your backup or verification in the Backup Wizard or Backup tab, select the Run Command After Operation check box.

Result

The Run Command After Backup Setup window is displayed before the operation is scheduled or initiated.

2

Specify the computer where you want the command to be run.

3

Specify the full path of the command you want to run.

Note
If the script is stored on a network share, use the UNC path rather than the network drive letter to specify the script's location.

4

In the Command Arguments field, specify the command arguments for the command or batch file invocation.

You can type the arguments or, for SnapManager arguments, you can select them in the SnapManager Variables list and click Select to insert them in the Command Arguments field.

Caution
If more than one snapshot exists for this operation, you must include that snapshot type's variable name once for every snapshot. If you do not, you cannot create a complete archive.

For details, see Types of SnapManager variables.

Note
If you often use the Run Command After Operation feature with the same arguments, you can specify a default value for the command arguments. For details, see Specifying a default command setup.

5

Click OK to return to the backup or verification setup process.

Result:

The command you specified, with the snapshot and snapinfo information for this backup inserted, runs when the backup or verification is complete.

Specifying a default command setup  Top

If you run a particular command often, you can create a default command setup so that you don't have to enter the command information each time you initiate a backup or verification.

To specify a default command after operation setup, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

From the SnapManager main window, select Options > Default Run Command After Backup Setup.

Result

The Run Command After Backup Setup window is displayed.

2

Enter the information for the command that you run most often.

For details, see Running a command after backup or verification.

3

Click OK.

Result

SnapManager verifies that the specified program exists on the specified system. SnapManager does not run the command at this time.
