Understanding the backup naming conventions

About the backup naming conventions  Top

Older versions of SnapManager for Exchange (before 3.0) always appended the string "recent" to the most recently created snapshot. This was to allow external scripts, for example archive scripts, to be able to operate on the most recent snapshot.

With the addition of the Run Command After Operation feature, appending "recent" is no longer necessary because the scripts can be integrated into the backup process.

SnapManager 3.1 for Microsoft Exchange has two backup naming convention options:

The generic naming convention is identical to the naming convention used in older SnapManager versions, and is the default.

The unique naming convention causes all backup names to contain a date-timestamp, including the most recently created one. This removes the need for the rename of the snapshot when the next backup is created.

Note
NetApp recommends that you select the unique naming convention option unless you have legacy scripts that require the presence of a backup with "recent" in its name.

You need to use the Options > Backup Setting menu to select this option, because, for backward compatibility, it is not selected by default.

For more information about the Run Command After Operation feature, see Using Run Command After Operation to archive automatically.
