Connecting to a different Exchange server

Use the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box to connect to the Exchange server you want to manage and specify the security authentication method to be used to establish the connection.

About the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box  Top

Use the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box to connect to a specific Exchange server. When you specify or change the Exchange server specified in this dialog box, SnapManager immediately connects to that server. This setting remains in effect, specifying the default Exchange server, until or unless you change it.

When you start SnapManager, the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box opens automatically if a default Exchange server has not yet been specified. You cannot proceed to use SnapManager until you successfully connect to an Exchange server. Thereafter, whenever the SnapManager application is started, it automatically connects to the default Exchange server using the default security authentication method.

If at a later time you want to manage a different Exchange server, explicitly open the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box to connect to the remote Exchange server using an Exchange server account that belongs to the Administrators group on that machine.

Connecting to a different Exchange server  Top

To connect to a different Exchange server, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Open the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box.

  • If the default Exchange server has not yet been specified, SnapManager automatically opens the dialog box when you start SnapManager.

In this case, the Exchange Server box is empty.

  • If SnapManager is already connected to the default Exchange server, open the dialog box explicitly. To do this, go to the menu bar and select Action > Connect to Another Exchange Server.

In this case, the Exchange Server box displays the name of the currently connected Exchange server and the Exchange release and build numbers.

2

In the Exchange Server box, specify the Exchange server you want to manage.

3

Click OK.

Result

The Connect to Exchange Server dialog box closes, and SnapManager connects to the specified Exchange server using the specified security authentication method.

Note
Whenever you connect to an Exchange server, SnapManager checks that the Exchange server is running the supported versions of Exchange and SnapDrive. These checkpoints are described within the procedure described in Starting SnapManager and connecting to the default server.

4

If, instead of connecting to the specified Exchange server, SnapManager displays an error message regarding the Exchange server or SnapDrive version on that Exchange server, do the following:

    1. Refer to Windows host system requirements to determine which software components you need to update on the Exchange server.
    2. Close the SnapManager application.
    3. Upgrade the software on the Exchange server as needed.
    4. Restart SnapManager.
