Options  Top

The options shown in the synopsis for this command are described in the following table:

Option

Description

-v

Verbose output.

The -v option informs SnapBackup to display verbose information regarding the backup job. This is useful for seeing how the backup job runs and what error might have occurred.

-b

Backup operation

Denotes this as a backup operation and specifies the list of Storage group to be backup. The list is always preceded by the count, specifying the number Storage Groups in the list.

-s

Verify only operation.

Denotes this as a verify only operation and specifies the list of Storage group to be verified. The list is always preceded by the count, specifying the number Storage Groups in the list.

-d

Number of backups to retain.

Used for backup operations to specify the number of backups to retain after the delete phase.

-rd

Use day base backup deletion retention.

Denotes that the deletion of backups is to be based on an "older than number of days" policy. This option used in conjunction with the "-d" option will specify the number of days after which a backup is to be deleted. Absence of this option denotes a deletion policy of based on retained backup count.

-nc

No verification of database at end of backup operation.

Denotes that the verification phase of a backup operation is to be skipped.

-c

Verification server and number of Snapshots.

Specifies the host to be used as the verification server for the verification phase of a backup operation. If the verification server is followed by a number, then this is a verification operation and the number specifies how many backup are to be verified.

-daily

Mark as member of "Daily Management Group."

Denotes that the backup or verify are to be flagged as being a part of the "Daily Management Group."

-weekly

Mark as member of "Weekly Management Group."

Denotes that the backup or verify are to be flagged as being a part of the "Weekly Management Group."

-all

Mark as member of "All Backup Management Group."

Denotes that this verify operation is part of all and any backup management group.

-u

Use Unique naming convention.

Denotes that the backup to be created are to be named using the Unique naming convention. The most recent backup is to be named using the date and time instead of the string "recent". Absents of this option causes the most recent backup to be named using the Generic naming convention, where backups are named using the word "_recent."

-m

Do not update SnapMirror after backup operation.

Suppresses the SnapMirror replication phase of a backup operation. SnapMirror updates specified volume to reflect incremental updates on a source volume. If a SnapManager volume is enable for SnapMirror usage and this option is not specified, then at the end of a backup operation, the SnapMirror destination will be update from the source volume.

-k

Do not retain up-to-minute restore ability.

The logs are not to be deleted for any backups deleted as part of this backup operation. This will retain the up-to-the-minute restore ability for older backups that remain after the delete phase of a backup operation.

-t

Do not backup truncated logs.

During the backup operation, skip the backing up of log which will be truncated. This option can be used to conserve space on the LUN containing the backed up Exchange logs.

-mpdir

Use specified mount point directory.

Specify which mount point directory a snapshot will be mounted to during database verification

-mp

Mount Snapshot to a directory.

Mount snapshots in a default NTFS directory during database verification. This option is also effective when there are no available drive letters to mount snapshots.

-r

Run specified command with arguments after backup operation.

Specifies the complete path and arguments for the command to be run after the backup or verify operation is complete

-a

Run command on specified server

Specifies the server where the command is to be run after the backup or verify operation is complete.

-p

Verification Throttling

Specifies the throttling values to be used for the verify operation.

Dependencies  Top

The -c and -nc options are mutually exclusive

The -daily, -weekly, and -all options are mutually exclusive.

Required options  Top

Either the -s or the -b option are required, but they are mutually exclusive.

Default behavior:  Top

Database and log verification

The running of verification after a backup operation is the default. The -nc option will suppress the behavior. The -c option will override the verification server specified in the SnapManager GUI.

Management group

The default option is Standard, where backups are marked with standard backup management group specification.

Backup retention

Backup retention defaults to the "In excess of" policy, where backups are deleted base on backup count. The -rd option will override this option and set the policy to one based on date.

Backup naming

The naming of backups defaults to the Unique naming policy where the most recent backup is named using the text string _recent.

Examples of use  Top

The following examples show a few of the ways the snapbackup command can be invoked. It is assumed that these operations are invoked from the SnapManager directory

Backup Example #1

snapbackup EXCHSRVR3 -b 2 "First Storage Group", "Second Storage Group" -nc

This command creates a new backup of two storage groups on EXCHSRVR3 in the Standard backup management group (the default), using the unique naming convention (the backup will be named using the date-time stamp). No verification or command after operation is performed, and no older backups are deleted.

Backup Example #2

snapbackup EXCHSRVR3 -b 2 "First Storage Group", "Second Storage Group" -c SRVR7 -d 3 -daily -m

This command creates a new backup in the Daily backup management group. The backup is verified on SRVR7, and all older Daily backups are deleted except for the three most recent ones. No SnapMirror mirror replication is initiated after the backup, even if the volume is a SnapMirror source volume.

Backup Example #3

snapbackup EXCHSRVR3 -b 1 "First Storage Group" -nc -d 4 -weekly -u -k -a SRVR3 -r "C:\SnapManager Scripts\scriptname.txt" "$ExchSnapshot $SnapInfoPath"

This command creates a new Weekly backup of only the First Storage Group, using the unique naming convention, while deleting all older Weekly backups except for the 4 most recent ones. The up-to-the-minute restore ability is retained for any older backups that remain after the deletions. After the backup is complete, it is archived using the run command after operation capability.

Verification Example #1

snapbackup EXCHSRVR3 -c SRVR6 3 -s 2 "First Storage Group", "Second Storage Group" -all

This command verifies the last 3 backups, in any backup management group, that contains both First Storage Group and Second Storage Group. The server SRVR6 is used to perform the verification.
