There can be between one and four storage groups in an Exchange server.

A storage group contains from one to five databases.

Recovery storage group  Top

For Exchange 2003 only, there can be a fifth storage group called the Recovery Storage Group. SnapManager does not support backing up or restoring to this special storage group.

Note
The presence of a Recovery Storage Group can interfere with SnapManager's ability to perform a restore. For more information, see Exchange Recovery Storage Group incompatibility with SnapManager Restore.

Storage groups per virtual server  Top

An Exchange Server cluster has one or more Exchange virtual servers. In an active/active 2-node cluster, the maximum number of clustered storage groups is four for the entire clustered system because four is the maximum number of storage groups that can run on a single cluster node. An active/passive Exchange Server cluster can have more than two cluster nodes. The maximum number of Exchange virtual servers in an active/passive cluster is one less than the number of nodes in the cluster. An active/passive Exchange cluster can have more than four storage groups because only one Exchange virtual server runs on a cluster node at any given time.
