Starting SnapManager and connecting to the default server

To start SnapManager for the first time, complete the following steps.

Step

Action

1

Start SnapManager 3.2 for Microsoft Exchange. To do this, go to the Start menu and select Program Files > SnapManager for Exchange.

Result

The SnapManager main window appears. The next step depends on whether you have just upgraded to SnapManager 3.2 or installed SnapManager for the first time:

  • If you have just upgraded to SnapManager 3.2 for Microsoft Exchange, SnapManager automatically connects to the default Exchange server already configured. Go to Step 3.
  • If you have just installed SnapManager for the first time, the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box appears so that you can specify the default Exchange server.
2

Specify the default Exchange Server:

    1. In the drop-down box, select or enter the Exchange server you want to manage.
    2. Click OK.

Result

SnapManager connects to the specified Exchange server and then creates a share for remote access to the Report directory.

The first time SnapManager is launched, it creates a Report directory share, SMEReportFolder, to allow for remote administration. The following accounts are granted Full Control on this share:

  • The logged-in user on the local machine
  • The Administrators group on the local machine

If SnapManager was recently upgraded to SnapManager 3.2, there might be other existing accounts with permissions on the share:

  • If only the existing group Everyone has permissions on the Report directory share, SnapManager removes the Full Control permissions to the Reports directory for that group.
  • If multiple existing accounts (including Everyone) have permissions on the Report directory share, SnapManager does not modify those accounts.
3

Wait until SnapManager verifies the software versions on the default Exchange server and then prompts you to start the Configuration Wizard.

SnapManager performs the following verification activities:

  • First, SnapManager checks the Microsoft Exchange version.

If SnapManager detects that the Microsoft Exchange 2000 or 2003 software does not have the minimum service pack level required by SnapManager, an error message box appears.

If this occurs, see the table of Windows host system requirements and note the requirements for Microsoft Exchange.

    • If you have a different Exchange server that has the minimum service pack required by SnapManager, you can connect to that instance instead. To do this, open the Connect to Exchange Server dialog box (by selecting Action > Connect to Another Exchange) and then go to Step 2.
    • Otherwise, close the SnapManager application, upgrade Microsoft Exchange as needed, and then restart SnapManager.
  • Next, SnapManager checks the SnapDrive version.

If SnapManager detects that SnapDrive is installed but that it is a version not supported with this version of SnapManager, a warning dialog box appears.

If this occurs, see the table of Windows host system requirements and note the requirements for SnapDrive. Close the SnapManager application, upgrade SnapDrive as needed, and then restart SnapManager.

  • Finally, if SnapManager detects that no databases have been configured for use with SnapManager, a message box appears and prompts you to run the Configuration Wizard.
4

Click OK.

Result

The message box closes, and SnapManager automatically launches the Configuration Wizard.

5

Click Cancel to exit the Configuration Wizard without specifying any database or LUN configuration information yet.

Result

The Configuration Wizard closes, leaving only the SnapManager main window open.

Note
If you are running SnapManager on a Windows Server 2003 machine with the Windows XP theme enabled, SnapManager is displayed with the Windows XP theme also.
