Upgrading to SnapManager 2.1

This section contains procedures for upgrading to SnapManager 2.1 for Microsoft SQL Server on a Windows host system that is running SnapManager 2.0 or 1.5. See the following topics for more information:

Pre-upgrade checklist  Top

Before you upgrade from SnapManager 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 to SnapManager 2.1for Microsoft SQL Server, be sure that your Windows host systems and the storage system are running the supported software versions as described in Chapter 2, Preparing to Install or Upgrade SnapManager.

The following paragraphs summarize these software upgrade considerations.

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005

Be sure that the appropriate Service Pack is installed for the Microsoft SQL Server that you are running. This is described in Verifying Windows host system requirements.

SnapDrive

SnapManager 2.1 for Microsoft SQL Server is supported by SnapDrive 4.1, x64 and x86 versions. SnapManager 2.0 for Microsoft SQL Server is supported by SnapDrive 4.0, 3.2 and SnapDrive 3.1.1R1, whereas SnapManager 1.5 is supported by these versions of SnapDrive as well as older versions, and SnapManager 1.0 is supported by SnapDrive 2.0.1. If SnapDrive 3.2 or 3.1.1R1 is not already installed on your SQL Server computer, you will need to upgrade to one of those versions. For more details, see Verifying Windows host system requirements.

Data ONTAP

If you need to upgrade SnapDrive on your Windows host systems, be sure that your storage system is running a compatible version of Data ONTAP, as described in Verifying storage system requirements.

For the latest information

For the most current information about SnapManager and SnapDrive, see Current information. The listed documents (and all other NetApp documents) are available at the NOW site at http://now.netapp.com/NOW/knowledge/docs.

    3. Use the NTBackup utility that is part of Windows 2000 Server to create and maintain a current emergency repair disk (ERD). In Windows Server 2003, a repair disk is created as part of running the ASR (Automatic System Recovery) Wizard.
3

If you have not already done so, verify that your host system meets the minimum requirements.

Note
If the system is currently running SnapManager 1.5 for Microsoft SQL Server, you will need to upgrade your version of SnapDrive.

For details, see Verifying Windows host system requirements.

4

If you have not already done so, verify that your storage system meets the minimum requirements.

Note
If the Windows host system is currently running SnapManager 1.5 for Microsoft SQL Server, you will need to upgrade your version of Data ONTAP on the storage system to comply with the newer version of SnapDrive on the Windows host system.

For details, see Verifying storage system requirements.

5

Start the software installation utility for SnapManager from either the SnapManager CD-ROM or from the network.
