Viewing the current locations of SQL Server databases  Top

The Where to Move Databases screen contains the following information.

Databases on local disks

The list in the upper left portion of the screen displays the names of the SQL Server databases that reside on local disks. A database would appear in this list for one of the following reasons:

LUNs on the storage system

The list in the upper right portion of the screen lists the LUNs on the storage system. For more information about any LUN in the Disk List, move the mouse over the LUN name. This causes a tooltip to appear and display the IP address or host name of the storage system and the name of the volume that houses the LUN.

Databases on LUNs

The list in the lower left portion of the screen lists the SQL Server databases that have been migrated to LUNs. A database would appear in this list for one of the following reasons:

Migrating SQL Server databases from local disk to LUNs  Top

To move SQL Server databases from a local disk to LUNs, complete the following steps from within the Where to Move Databases screen of the Configuration Wizard.

Step

Action

1

If you plan to place the SQL Server transaction log files on the same LUNs as the SQL Server data files, go to Step 4.

Preparing to place data files and log files on different LUNs.

2

Check that there are enough LUNs available for you to place the data files and transaction log files on different LUNs.

If there are not enough LUNs available, then do the following:

    1. Click Cancel to exit the Configuration Wizard.
    2. Use SnapDrive to create new LUNs.
    3. Re-attempt the SQL Server database migration.
3

Go to the list in the upper left pane and expand the view for the database you want to migrate. This is done by clicking the "+" next to the database name.

Assign databases to a LUN.

4

In the upper list, select the databases (or individual data files or transaction log files) that you want to migrate.

Note
If an SQL Server 2005 database has the full-text search option enabled, the full-text search catalogs are visible when you click the "+" next to the database name. The full text catalogs can be migrated, backed up, and restored along with the other files or filegroups of the database.

To select a single database

Click to select the database name.

To select a range of databases

Select the first database in the range and then press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard while you select the last database in the range.

To select multiple databases

Select the first database and then press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you select additional databases.

To place data files and log files on different LUNs

(for a configuration consisting of one or more databases sharing two LUNs, create two mappings.

  • In one mapping, select only data files and map them to a LUN.
  • In the other mapping, select only transaction log files and map them to a different LUN.

    Note
You will need repeat this sequence (Step 4 through Step 6) in order to create the second mapping.

To select multiple files, select the first file and then press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you select additional files.

5

In the Disk List, select the LUN to which you want to migrate the selected databases or files.

Note
For more information about any LUN in the Disk List, move the mouse over the LUN name. This causes a tooltip to appear and display the IP address or host name of the storage system and the name of the volume that houses the LUN.

6

Click the move (<=>) button.

Result

The lower list is updated to include the new mapping.

If you need to undo any database-LUN assignments:

7

The Where to Move Databases screen supports two types of undo operations:

  • To undo a particular mapping in the "Database valid/change location..." list, select the mapping in the lower list and then click Reconfigure.

The selected database (or individual data file or transaction log file) is returned to the list of unconfigured databases in the upper list.

  • To undo all changes made during this session in the Where to Move Databases screen, click Undo All.

Moving SQL Server databases to different LUNs  Top

To change the location of a database already associated with a LUN, complete the following steps from within the Where to Move Databases screen of the Configuration Wizard.

Step

Action

1

If you plan to move entire databases (as opposed to moving the SQL Server transaction log files separately from the SQL Server data files), go to Step 4.

Preparing to move log files separately from the data files

2

Check that there are enough LUNs available for you to move the transaction log files separately from the data files.

If there are not enough LUNs available, then do the following:

    1. Click Cancel to exit the Configuration Wizard.
    2. Use SnapDrive to create new LUNs.
    3. Re-attempt the SQL Server database migration.
3

Expand both of the database lists so that the data files and transaction log files are visible.

    1. Go to the upper left list and expand the view for the database you want to migrate. This is done by clicking the "+" next to the database name.
    2. Go to the lower left list and expand the view in order to expose the data files and transaction log files in their present locations.

Result

Now you can associate the data files and transaction log files individually with a LUN.

Move databases to different LUNs

4

In the lower left list, highlight the mapping you want to change, then click Reconfigure.

Result

The mapping is removed from the lower left list. The database (or individual data file or transaction log file) is returned to the upper left list, and you can reassociate it with any available LUN.

5

In the upper left list, select the database (or individual data file or transaction log file) that you just removed from the lower left list.

  • In one mapping, select only data files and map them to a LUN.
  • In the other mapping, select only transaction log files and map them to a different LUN.

    Note
You will need repeat this sequence (Step 5 through Step 7) in order to create the second mapping.

To select multiple files, select the first file and then press and hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard while you select additional files.

6

In the Disk List, select the LUN to move it to.

7

Click the move (<=>) button.

Result

The lower left list is updated to include the newly specified mapping.

Viewing the full path for a database on a LUN  Top

To view the full path for a database (or individual data file or transaction log file) that has been migrated to a LUN, complete the following steps from within the Where to Move Databases screen of the Configuration Wizard.

Step

Action

1

If you plan to view the path of an entire database (as opposed to an individual data file or transaction log files), go to Step 3.

2

Go to the lower left list and expand the view in order to expose the data files and transaction log files.

Result

Now you can view the data files and transaction log files individually with a LUN.

3

In the lower left list, select the database component and then click Details.
