There are many ways to use Cascade Connect. We categorize them into four general cases and a few special cases. In the illustrations for this chapter, CC stands for Cascade Connect, CS stands for Connect Server, and DH stands for the Cascade DataHub.
A practical aspect of planning these connections is calculating how many licenses will be required. The easiest way to calculate the number of Cascade Connect licenses is to count the number of connections between Windows computers and data server computers. Additionally, one Cascade DataHub license is needed for each DataHub used.
As mentioned elsewhere in this manual, you do not need to use the Cascade DataHub with Cascade Connect. However, we recommend it because it efficiently manages and distributes process data on the data server computer, and it enables extra Cascade Connect features. Also, most of the cases discussed here will be more difficult to program and more prone to errors without the Cascade DataHub. Please see Technical Information for more details.

Connecting one data server computer with one Windows computer can be accomplished using:
1 copy of the Connect Server on the data server.
1 copy of Cascade Connect on the Windows computer.
1 copy of the Cascade DataHub on the data server is recommended, especially for bidirectional (read/write) mode. (See When to use the Cascade DataHub.)
The scenario illustrated above would require one Cascade Connect license and one Cascade DataHub license.
