4.1. Testing Overview

During normal operation, Cascade Connect starts up in the following sequence, as shown in the diagram below:

  1. In Windows, you click on a Cascade Connect shortcut icon, which starts Cascade Connect based on its configuration file.

  2. Cascade Connect then sends a message across the network to the data server computer to start the Connect Server program. It also starts the Windows client program through a DDE connection.

  3. Then the Connect Server either registers with the Cascade DataHub, or it starts the client program on the data server.

However, the test follows a different order. You first must test the Connect Server program to make sure it is installed correctly. Then on the Windows computer you create the configuration file and shortcut icon if necessary, and start Cascade Connect. Once Cascade Connect is running, you send data to it from the data server computer. To keep the test simple we have made it so you run Cascade Connect on its own, without a Windows client program, using the Cascade Connect runtime window to read the incoming data.
